Poker is a family of card games played worldwide, usually in casinos and private homes. It consists of a deck of cards, and players compete by wagering over the hand they believe to be the best. Most poker games involve more than one round of betting, and some require players to contribute to the pot prior to the deal.

Some poker variants allow a player to win a prize by making a small bet or by bluffing his or her way into a large one. For example, in a multi-table game, the best hand can be one that includes a straight or five of a kind. Other hands, such as two pairs or a flush, have no special relative rank in the world of poker.

In a typical stud game, each player is required to make a bet to qualify for the main pot. This is usually an ante, which is a bit less than a full-value wager. When a player reaches this milestone, he or she is considered an active player.

Many versions of the game are played with a variety of different cards, including the full 52-card deck, which is the norm in most North American casinos. Other countries, such as the U.S., may use a smaller deck or a short-hand deck, which is typically just a few dozen cards. Although the standard deck is the king of the road, there are many variants of the game. One of the most popular is stud poker.

A poker game may also be played online. Online poker tournaments are gaining in popularity, with viewers ranging from cable television networks to satellite distributors. Unlike offline poker, the internet allows for a wide variety of betting options.
